Vietnam to roll out biofuel use nationwide from June 1

Vietnam will begin nationwide use of biofuels from June 1, a move seen as a major step in the country’s efforts to cut emissions, improve energy security and support sustainable development, reports biofuels international.

Under the new policy, petrol mixed with biofuels will become the standard fuel sold across the country, replacing conventional fuels made only from fossil sources.

The decision is part of the government’s broader plan to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, support the domestic farm sector and meet international climate commitments. Road transport, one of Vietnam’s fastest-growing sources of pollution, is expected to see a drop in carbon emissions as a result of the change.

Biofuels are produced from renewable biological materials and provide a lower-emission option while remaining suitable for existing vehicles and fuel distribution systems.

Government officials have said fuel producers and distributors are ready for the transition, with enough supply available to ensure smooth delivery to consumers and businesses. Public awareness drives have also been launched to explain the benefits of biofuels and respond to concerns about fuel quality and vehicle performance.

The policy is expected to boost investment in local biofuel production, create new income opportunities for farmers and support economic growth in rural areas. It also strengthens Vietnam’s efforts to widen its energy mix and reduce reliance on imported fossil fuels.

By adopting biofuels across the country, Vietnam joins a growing list of nations taking practical steps to cut transport emissions and move toward a more sustainable energy future.
