Tashkent: Uzbekistan is set to start producing green hydrogen in June 2025, marking a major step in its renewable energy ambitions. The announcement was made by Abid Malik, President of ACWA Power for Central Asia, during the Tashkent International Investment Forum, reports UZ Daily.
Malik said ACWA Power is working on two major green hydrogen projects — one in Saudi Arabia and the other in Uzbekistan. The Uzbek facility is expected to produce 3,000 tonnes of green hydrogen annually once operational.
“We believe this will firmly place Uzbekistan on the global map for green hydrogen production,” Malik said.
The project began in November 2023 with a groundbreaking ceremony led by President Shavkat Mirziyoyev in the Tashkent Region. It is being developed in partnership with ACWA Power and will be implemented in two phases with a total investment of US$88 million.
The first phase targets an annual output of 3,000 tonnes of green hydrogen starting in 2025. The second phase, according to JSC “Uzkimyosanoat,” will include building a facility in Chirchik to produce up to 500,000 tonnes of ammonia per year using green hydrogen. It will also involve the construction of a wind power plant with a capacity of up to 2.4 gigawatts to support production.
