US: Ethanol credit generation rises in May, biodiesel credits decline – EPA data

The United States saw an increase in ethanol blending credit generation in May, while credits tied to biodiesel production dropped, according to data released by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) on Wednesday, reports Tradingview.com.

Roughly 1.22 billion ethanol blending credits, known as D6 Renewable Identification Numbers (RINs), were issued in May—up from 1.16 billion in April. In contrast, biodiesel blending credits, or D4 RINs, declined to around 508 million in May from 592 million the previous month.

These credits are created with each gallon of biofuel produced and are used by oil refiners and fuel importers to meet the EPA’s renewable fuel blending requirements for petroleum-based fuels.

Below is a breakdown of RIN generation for April by fuel type:

The D6 credits correspond to conventional ethanol, while D4 credits are tied to biomass-based diesel. D3 credits are generated from cellulosic biofuel, and D5 credits apply to advanced non-cellulosic biofuels.
