The Uruguayan Roadmap for Green Hydrogen and Derivatives outlines ambitious goals to install approximately 18GW of renewable energy capacity and 9GW of electrolysers by 2040. Initiated by the Ministry of Industry, Energy and Mining (MIEM) and unveiled last year, the roadmap’s initial phase aims to ramp up production until 2025. It prioritizes promoting synthetic fuels and green fertilizers to stimulate domestic markets, offering a potential annual revenue of $2.1 billion, reported H2View.
The second phase, slated for 2026-2030, focuses on scaling both domestic demand and production, while launching initial export projects. The third phase, from 2030 to 2040, anticipates large-scale production of hydrogen, ammonia, and green fuels for global export.
Cost projections indicate production costs could decrease to $1.2-1.4/kg by 2030, supported by a total renewable energy capacity exceeding 90GW at sites with optimal potential.
The roadmap also sets intermediate targets, including installing 300MW of electrolyser capacity by 2030 and scaling up to 3GW by 2035.
