UP pushes for CBG and Bio-CNG production with help of FAO and DUVASU

Lucknow: In a move aimed at boosting clean energy and modernising the livestock sector, the Uttar Pradesh government is planning a partnership focused on biogas and sustainable farming practices.

The initiative took shape during a meeting between Additional Chief Secretary (Animal Husbandry) Mukesh Meshram and representatives of the Food and Agriculture Organization and DUVASU Mathura. Officials said the discussions laid the groundwork for a proposed tripartite agreement among the three bodies, The Times of India reported.

Biogas production using cow dung and agricultural residues emerged as a key focus area, with plans to promote compressed biogas and bio-CNG as part of a broader clean energy push. Alongside this, the collaboration will also work on strengthening fodder systems and building a disease monitoring network based on the ‘One Health’ approach.

The three partners agreed to begin by using the existing network of cow shelters in districts such as Mathura and Gorakhpur. Uttar Pradesh is expected to serve as a pilot state, demonstrating scalable models for circular livestock systems that combine waste management with energy production.

Under the plan, FAO India will act as the knowledge partner, offering technical support and global expertise, while DUVASU Mathura will coordinate and implement projects on the ground.

Officials said the initiative aims to create a model that links livestock management with renewable energy generation, while improving farm incomes and sustainability.
