Lucknow: In a step toward advancing clean energy innovation, the Uttar Pradesh government has held advanced discussions with Japan’s Yamanashi Prefecture to establish a Centre of Excellence (CoE) on green hydrogen in the state, reports The Times of India.
Senior officials from Invest UP, the University of Yamanashi, and the Yamanashi Prefecture government participated in a high-level virtual meeting on Wednesday to discuss the proposed collaboration. The talks focused on creating a roadmap for research, technology development, and industrial applications of green hydrogen. Both sides agreed to meet again soon to finalise the framework and identify specific areas of cooperation.
According to officials, the proposed CoE will function as a multidisciplinary hub, bringing together experts from leading Indian institutions along with co-opted faculty from technical universities. The University of Yamanashi will serve as the technology partner, while several industry stakeholders and start-ups—four of which have already shown interest—will contribute to prototyping, testing, and pilot-scale deployment.
The centre will focus on hydrogen generation, storage, and distribution systems, renewable energy-based microgrids, and techno-economic studies of the hydrogen value chain. It will also support training, research, and entrepreneurship to drive industrial decarbonisation and sustainable growth.
Officials said the Indo-Japan collaboration will strengthen bilateral ties, promote technology indigenisation, and nurture start-up ecosystems under the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative. The effort aims to position Uttar Pradesh as an emerging hub for green hydrogen innovation in India.
