U.S. ethanol and distillers grains exports rise in March, USDA reports

The United States exported 195.8 million gallons of ethanol and 1.03 million metric tons of distillers grains in March 2025, according to new data released by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Foreign Agricultural Service (FAS) on May 6. Both figures reflect an increase over February exports, reports Ethanol Producer Magazine.

Ethanol exports rose significantly from 138.75 million gallons in February and were also higher than the 159.31 million gallons exported in March 2024. Canada remained the largest importer of U.S. ethanol, receiving 64.5 million gallons. The U.K. followed with 29.97 million gallons, and India with 18.78 million gallons. In total, ethanol was shipped to nearly three dozen countries.

The total value of ethanol exports reached $421.66 million in March, up from $293.24 million in February and $365.08 million in March 2024. Over the first quarter of 2025, ethanol exports totaled 532.6 million gallons, worth $1.14 billion—compared to 448.3 million gallons worth $1.01 billion during the same period last year.

Exports of distillers grains, a byproduct of ethanol production used primarily as livestock feed, also climbed in March to 1.03 million metric tons. This marks an increase from February’s 849,645 metric tons, though slightly below the 1.06 million metric tons exported in March 2024.

Distillers grains were exported to roughly 40 countries. Mexico topped the list with 227,548 metric tons, followed by South Korea (114,681 metric tons) and Indonesia (93,483 metric tons). The export value reached $253.53 million, up from $205.61 million in February but down from $307.81 million in March last year.

For the first three months of 2025, the U.S. exported 3.69 million metric tons of distillers grains valued at $655.07 million, compared to 2.94 million metric tons worth $844.09 million during the same period in 2024.

Additional data and detailed export information are available on the USDA FAS website.
