Tunisia’s Ministry of Industry, Mines and Energy has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with French hydrogen developer HDF Energy to launch a large-scale green hydrogen project. This initiative aims to cater to both European and domestic markets. The project envisions a capacity of 1 GW from wind power, 500 MW from solar PV, and 800 MW of electrolysers to produce up to 65 kt of hydrogen, with an initial investment of around €3 billion. The green hydrogen will be exported to Europe via the SoutH2 corridor, a pipeline project designed to transport hydrogen from North Africa through southern Italy to major demand centers in Italy, Austria, and Germany, reported Enerdata.
Tunisia plans to become a leading hydrogen producer, leveraging its ample solar and wind resources. The country targets producing 8.3 Mt of green hydrogen and its derivatives by 2050, with 2.3 Mt for the domestic market and 6 Mt for export, and anticipates a total investment of €120 billion.
