Global energy giant TotalEnergies announced on April 22 its plans to reconfigure the petrochemical operations at its refinery located in Antwerp, Belgium. A key element of this strategic shift includes the addition of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) production capacity through a process called coprocessing, reports Biomass Magazine.
According to TotalEnergies, the initial SAF project at the Antwerp refinery is expected to generate an annual production capacity of 50,000 tons. The SAF will be produced via coprocessing, a method that allows for the simultaneous processing of traditional hydrocarbons and biomass within a conventional refining unit. SAF production is currently slated to commence later this year.
In addition to SAF production, TotalEnergies outlined other planned changes for the Antwerp facility, including initiatives related to the production of green hydrogen, the electrification of industrial processes, and the implementation of battery-based energy storage solutions.
However, due to existing overcapacity, TotalEnergies also announced its intention to cease operations of the oldest steam cracker at the Antwerp site. This change is currently anticipated to be implemented by the end of 2027.
The full details of TotalEnergies’ announcement are available on the company’s official website.
