TotalEnergies, Google ink long-term pact for 1 GW solar energy in Texas

TotalEnergies has signed two long-term Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) to provide 1 gigawatt (GW) of solar power to Google’s data centres in Texas, US. The agreements are expected to generate about 28 terawatt-hours (TWh) of renewable electricity over the next 15 years, Energetica India reported.

The electricity will come from two solar projects owned by TotalEnergies that are currently under development in Texas — the 805 MWp Wichita site and the 195 MWp Mustang Creek site. According to the company, construction on both projects is set to begin in the second quarter of 2026.

The new agreements add to separate gross PPAs worth 1.2 GW recently secured by Clearway, a California-based renewables company in which TotalEnergies holds a 50 percent stake. These projects will support Google’s data centres across the ERCOT market in Texas, PJM in the Northeast, and SPP in the central US.

Marc-Antoine Pignon, Vice President for Renewables, US, at TotalEnergies, said the agreements represent the largest renewable power deal signed by the company in the country. He noted that the move reflects the company’s plan to provide customised renewable energy options that help major technology firms reduce carbon emissions. He added that the project will also help tackle issues related to land use and power supply for data centres by enabling large-scale co-location.

Will Conkling, Director of Clean Energy and Power at Google, said maintaining a strong, stable, and affordable electricity grid remains a key focus as the company expands its infrastructure. He added that the agreement with TotalEnergies will bring new power generation to the local grid and increase the availability of reliable and reasonably priced electricity for the wider region.

TotalEnergies said it currently has a gross capacity portfolio of 10 GW from onshore solar, wind, and battery storage projects operating across the US. This includes 400 MW in the PJM market in the Northeast and 5 GW in the ERCOT market in Texas.
