Topsoe, Petrobras sign deal for major SAF project in Brazil

Topsoe has signed an agreement with Petrobras to provide technology and services for a proposed facility at Petrobras’ Boaventura Energy Complex in Itaboraí, in the state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Biodiesel Magazine reported.

Under the agreement, Topsoe will supply its HydroFlex technology, along with proprietary equipment and catalysts, to support the production of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and renewable diesel. The project is expected to use vegetable oils, waste materials and animal fat as raw materials. Once operational, the plant is expected to become one of the largest SAF facilities in Brazil.

Topsoe’s Chief Commercial Officer Yassir Ghiyati said the company is pleased to support Petrobras on the project. He said combining Petrobras’ presence in Brazil’s energy sector with Topsoe’s technology could help increase the supply of SAF and renewable diesel in Latin America. He described the initiative as an important step toward diversifying fuel sources in a major energy market. The agreement comes amid rising global demand for sustainable aviation fuel. According to projections by the International Air Transport Association, global SAF production is expected to reach 1.9 million metric tonnes in 2025, nearly double the 1 million tonnes produced in 2024. Output is forecast to rise further to 2.4 million tonnes in 2026.
