The Telangana State Road Transport Corporation has initiated work to install electric vehicle charging stations at 25 of its bus depots within the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation area, in preparation for the introduction of 2,200 electric buses in the city, reports The Economic Times.
As part of the preparations, TGSRTC held a coordination meeting on Thursday with the Telangana Southern Power Distribution Company Limited (TGSPDCL) to discuss the electricity supply needed for the charging stations and the arrangements for providing power connections.
In addition to the depots in Hyderabad, two charging points are planned at the Suryapet depot, while one charging station each will be set up at the Sangareddy and Nalgonda depots.
Officials said the charging infrastructure would require about 124 megawatts of electricity. Discussions during the meeting focused on the power infrastructure needed to support the facilities.
TGSRTC vice-chairman and managing director Y. Nagi Reddy said the corporation aims to roll out electric buses across the Greater Hyderabad region on a large scale within this year. He added that the transport body would make space available at suitable locations for setting up switching stations or substations required for charging operations.
TGSPDCL chairman Musharraf Faruqui asked power department officials to review the applications submitted by TGSRTC, prepare cost estimates by February 1, and begin work on establishing the charging stations.
