Tata Elxsi, a global leader in design and technology services, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Infineon Technologies, a leading semiconductor solutions provider, to collaboratively develop application-ready electric vehicle (EV) solutions tailored specifically for India.
This partnership comes at a time when India’s EV market is experiencing rapid growth, with sales expected to increase by 25 to 30 percent in 2024. Notably, electric two- and three-wheeler sales have surged by 28 percent year-on-year, reflecting the country’s accelerating move towards electrification.
Combining their strengths, Tata Elxsi and Infineon aim to fast-track the adoption of automotive-grade, cost-effective, and safety-compliant subsystems across various mobility segments. A key focus of the collaboration will be on meeting stringent safety standards, including ASIL-D compliance under ISO 26262, which governs functional safety in road vehicles.
While Tata Elxsi contributes its expertise in design, system integration, and validation, Infineon will provide early access to its latest semiconductor technologies such as silicon carbide (SiC)-based components, microcontrollers, and integrated circuits.
Together, the companies will work on developing high-voltage inverters for traction and auxiliary systems, scalable battery management systems, bi-directional onboard chargers, and thermal management solutions optimized for India’s diverse two-wheeler, three-wheeler, passenger vehicle, and commercial vehicle markets. The collaboration also paves the way for future innovations in sectors like eVTOL (electric vertical take-off and landing), energy, and off-highway vehicles.
Nambi Ganesh, Head of Automotive at Tata Elxsi, highlighted the deepening partnership: “Many of our current EV solutions already incorporate Infineon’s SoCs and components. This MoU strengthens our collaboration, offering clearer scope and improved system-level alignment to meet India’s specific market needs. As EV adoption grows, our goal is to deliver production-ready platforms that comply with automotive standards and accelerate market readiness.”
Kenneth Lim, Senior Vice President of Automotive at Infineon Technologies Asia Pacific, expressed enthusiasm about the partnership: “We are dedicated to advancing innovation in the electric vehicle sector and enabling partners like Tata Elxsi to bring state-of-the-art technology to the market. By combining Tata Elxsi’s integration and design capabilities with our advanced semiconductor solutions, we aim to speed up the development of safe, efficient, and scalable EV systems across multiple vehicle segments, supporting India’s ambitious electrification targets.”
This initiative aligns with national goals set by NITI Aayog, aiming for 80 percent electrification of two- and three-wheelers and 70 percent of commercial vehicles by 2030.
