Tasmania has taken a major step forward in its ambition to become a global leader in green hydrogen production following a successful expressions of interest (EOI) process to identify a key project partner, reports Manufacturers’ Monthly.
Minister for Energy and Renewables, Nick Duigan, announced that Bell Bay Power Fuels has been selected as the provisional proponent for the Tasmanian Green Hydrogen Hub. The EOI attracted five high-quality submissions, highlighting strong industry interest and confidence in establishing a hydrogen industry in the state.
Duigan said the Hub could produce up to 45,000 tonnes of renewable hydrogen annually — enough to fuel more than 2,200 heavy vehicles for a full year. The project is also expected to create approximately 740 direct and indirect jobs, ranging from energy specialists such as engineers and technicians to skilled local tradespeople including concreters, metalworkers, fitters, and electricians.
As Australia’s leading renewable energy state, Tasmania offers unique advantages for industry and global markets, the Minister added. To support this growth, the 2025-26 state budget has allocated $64.8 million over the next four years to advance strategic renewable energy projects and strengthen Tasmania’s economy.
Key investments include $14.4 million for the Renewable Energy Approvals Pathway, which will help bring new clean energy generation online, and support for the Tasmanian Green Hydrogen Hub and the Renewable Energy Services Hub, aimed at preparing the state for emerging industries.
Duigan also highlighted the government’s strong commitment to Project Marinus, with a $300 million equity contingent reserved should the project receive a positive Final Investment Decision by August 2025.
“The Hydrogen Hub, together with our bold energy agenda, will attract investment, drive regional economic growth, and support Tasmania’s transition to a low-emission future,” Duigan said. “It will also reinforce our position as a renewable energy leader, which is at the heart of our 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania’s Future.”
