Tallink advances green shipping with higher biomethane use

Tallink Grupp is moving closer to fully adopting renewable fuel for its shuttle vessels operating between Tallinn and Helsinki, with liquefied biomethane (LBM) already accounting for a significant share of fuel use, MarineLinkreported.

In January, 74% of the fuel consumed by the Megastar and MyStar ships came from liquefied biomethane. The company has set a target to eventually replace all liquefied natural gas (LNG) demand with LBM as part of its efforts to lower emissions.

Paavo Nõgene, Chief Executive Officer of Tallink Grupp, said the two vessels—among the busiest on the Tallinn–Helsinki route—demonstrate that cleaner maritime transport is already achievable. He noted that the shift to biofuel has helped create what he described as a greener connection across the Gulf of Finland.

Fuel made from renewable raw materials will also help the company comply with tightening greenhouse gas reduction rules set by the European Union and the International Maritime Organization (IMO). Tallink estimates that a full transition to liquefied biomethane could cut greenhouse gas emissions by about 75% compared with those from fossil fuels.

The biomethane used by the shuttle ships is supplied by Elenger. Each delivery is supported by official certificates verifying that renewable fuel has been used within the supply chain and meets international standards—an important factor for freight companies seeking to track and reduce their environmental impact.
