Swedish energy firm swaps oil for wood powder in major green heating upgrade

A Swedish energy company, Norrenergi AB, is teaming up with Belgian technology company Vyncke to replace an oil-burning boiler with a new, more powerful one that runs on renewable wood powder, reports Bioenergy Insight.

The new system will also include better technology for cleaning the smoke it produces, which is meant to reduce emissions and make the whole process more efficient.

Work to design the new boiler is currently in progress. The company plans to build and install it between 2026 and 2027. It should start providing heat to homes and businesses in early 2027 and be fully up and running by the middle of that year.

Lars Olrin, the manager at the Norrenergi plant, said the change is a big step for the company. “We are moving away from oil and turning to wood to power our heating,” he explained. “This switch helps us cut pollution and depend less on fossil fuels, all while making sure we can reliably heat people’s homes in a sustainable way.”

The project is expected to significantly reduce the climate impact of the area’s heating system, helping to meet local and national environmental goals.

Jef Mestdagh, an executive at Vyncke, also expressed his company’s commitment. “We are excited to work with Norrenergi on this project,” he said. “Our equipment makes it easier for companies to stop using fossil fuels and start using renewable sources, which is better for both their efficiency and the planet.”
