SUEZ and Bouygues Telecom sign 15-year deal for renewable electricity supply

SUEZ and Bouygues Telecom have signed a 15-year direct electricity purchase agreement (Power Purchase Agreement or PPA), under which SUEZ will provide Bouygues Telecom with renewable electricity starting from January 1, 2027, reports Energynews.

Under the agreement, Bouygues Telecom will receive 53 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of renewable electricity annually. This power will be generated through energy recovered from household waste. Over the full term of the agreement, the total supply will amount to 800 GWh. The revenue from this contract will primarily go towards upgrading SUEZ’s Energy Recovery Units (ERUs), which is expected to improve their energy output and environmental performance.

SUEZ currently operates 34 ERUs across France. These units convert over 3.5 million tonnes of waste each year into local energy. According to the company, these facilities are continuously updated with technology designed to reduce carbon emissions and improve efficiency. SUEZ says the units play an important role in supplying low-carbon energy to its business and municipal partners.

Bouygues Telecom sees this agreement as part of its broader strategy to reduce its carbon footprint by turning to long-term renewable energy solutions. These types of agreements, the company says, provide pricing stability and are backed by guarantees confirming the renewable origin of the electricity.

The agreement also supports Bouygues Telecom’s climate goals. According to targets validated by the Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi), the company aims to reduce its direct and indirect greenhouse gas emissions (Scopes 1 and 2) by 29.4%, and its value chain emissions (Scope 3) by 17.5% by 2027, compared to 2021 levels. This new contract adds to Bouygues Telecom’s current renewable energy portfolio of 87 GWh per year.

David Lamy, General Director of SUEZ’s Waste Business Unit in France, commented on the deal, saying: “At SUEZ, we see waste as a valuable resource. Recovering energy from waste is one of the key ways we help businesses and communities move toward cleaner energy. This agreement with Bouygues Telecom is a significant step in helping companies meet their climate goals.”
