Strengthening green ties: India, Brazil discuss collaboration in biofuel and bioenergy

Union Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare and Rural Development Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan recently visited Brazil to attend the 15th BRICS Agriculture Ministers’ Meeting. During the visit, he emphasized the importance of increasing soybean production and exports from India, while also exploring deeper cooperation with Brazil in agriculture and related technologies. He is scheduled to return on Monday, April 21.

Leading the Indian delegation, Chouhan’s visit aimed to enhance bilateral ties in agricultural trade, technology, and innovation. Key areas of discussion included collaboration on biofuel, bioenergy, agricultural machinery, and supply chain integration. These efforts are expected to help Indian farmers gain better access to global technologies and practices.

Brazil, known for its remarkable growth in agricultural exports over the past five decades, serves as a model for India’s agricultural aspirations. Joint initiatives between the two countries are also seen as vital contributions to global food security.

The Union Minister held bilateral meetings with Brazil’s Minister of Agriculture and Livestock, Carlos Henrique Baquetta Favero, and Minister of Agricultural Development and Family Agriculture, Luiz Paulo Teixeira. These discussions focused on strengthening cooperation in agriculture, agri-tech, rural development, and food security.

In São Paulo, Chouhan also engaged with 27 leaders from Brazil’s agribusiness sector. Topics included trade in agricultural goods, food processing, innovation, biofuel, and enhancing supply chain integration.

Chouhan stressed the need to empower small farmers in India, noting that true global food security cannot be achieved without addressing their needs. He highlighted India’s commitment to inclusive, equitable, and sustainable agriculture, echoing the spirit of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam—the world is one family.

On the BRICS platform, India called for enhanced collaboration in agricultural research, innovation, food processing, and technology transfer. Chouhan reiterated that India is open to learning from Brazil’s agricultural model—particularly in areas such as soybean research, farm mechanization, irrigation, and sustainability.

The BRICS Agriculture Ministers’ Meeting, held in Brasília, saw participation from ministers and senior officials from member countries including Brazil, Russia, China, South Africa, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, UAE, Ethiopia, Indonesia, and Iran. The meeting focused on “Promoting inclusive and sustainable agriculture through cooperation, innovation, and equitable trade among BRICS countries.”

Chouhan’s visit marked more than a diplomatic engagement—it was a step forward in forging strong global partnerships and bringing advanced technology and practices to Indian agriculture. This collaboration aims to directly benefit farmers by increasing productivity and promoting sustainable, tech-driven farming methods.
