South Africa boosts green hydrogen push with industry-led training initiative

South Africa’s green hydrogen ambitions have received a major push with the launch of an industry-backed training system at Sasol’s operations in Sasolburg, bizcommunity reported.

The initiative, developed jointly by the Chemical Industries Education and Training Authority and Sasol, marks a key step in building the country’s capabilities in green hydrogen and preparing a skilled workforce for the emerging sector.

The project follows a multi-year collaboration between the two organisations. In April 2024, CHIETA and Sasol began working together to develop the training system, with funding approval of R1.8 million secured in 2025 to support its implementation.

Designed to provide practical, hands-on experience, the training system has been developed in partnership with Heliocentris. It includes a working 50W hydrogen fuel cell system that allows learners to directly engage with the technology and understand its functions through real-time experimentation.

The programme also includes training in solar photovoltaic systems and hydrogen fundamentals, placing it within the broader renewable energy and electrical skills ecosystem. Officials said the system is aimed at bridging the gap between classroom learning and industrial application, while ensuring training meets safety and industry standards.

CHIETA CEO Yershen Pillay said the initiative reflects a practical approach to building the green hydrogen economy. He emphasised that without skilled workers, the transition to cleaner energy systems would not be possible.

Sasol highlighted the importance of aligning skills development with changing industry needs, especially as hydrogen technologies become more integrated with existing sectors such as electrical engineering. The company is positioning itself to play a key role in the global hydrogen market.

The initiative also underlines the importance of collaboration between public and private sectors in supporting South Africa’s energy transition. With global investment in green hydrogen gaining momentum, such efforts are expected to help the country not only participate in the market but also develop the skilled workforce needed to sustain its growth.
