The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has introduced the Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) Registry, now managed by the Civil Aviation Decarbonization Organization (CADO). This new platform aims to create a global SAF market, driving the aviation industry’s shift toward net zero emissions by 2050.
“Aviation’s path to decarbonization is a collective effort. By transferring the SAF Registry to CADO, we’ve established a vital tool for all stakeholders. It guarantees that airlines worldwide can access SAF and use their purchases to meet climate-related commitments. The Registry will securely record the environmental attributes of SAF transactions, preventing double counting. Airlines, corporate clients, fuel producers, regulators, and related entities can document and account for their SAF activities within this global marketplace. While this is a significant and historic milestone, it’s just one step toward developing a robust, transparent, and dynamic global SAF market. The Registry alone won’t achieve miracles, but it’s an essential foundation for any progress,” stated Marie Owens Thomsen, IATA’s Senior Vice President.
She added, “To advance further, strong policy support is needed to scale up renewable energy production, including SAF. Governments should redirect subsidies from fossil fuel producers toward renewable energy initiatives. The success of the wind and solar sectors serves as a model, and this shift must happen without delay.”
