Royal Air Force flies patrol aircraft in Scotland using SAF mix

The Royal Air Force (RAF) has begun using a mix of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) and conventional jet fuel for its submarine hunter aircraft at the busy Morayshire base.

The RAF announced earlier this week that its Typhoon and Poseidon maritime patrol aircraft, operating from the RAF Lossiemouth base in Scotland, are now powered by a blend that includes SAF. This initiative aims to reduce emissions from flight operations.

BusinessGreen has contacted the RAF to seek details on the sources of the SAF being used.

The RAF stated that incorporating lower-carbon fuels into routine operations represents a first for the air force and underscores the Ministry of Defence’s commitment to cutting carbon emissions while maintaining national security.

Air Vice-Marshal Shaun Harris, RAF Director of Support, highlighted that this change will contribute to the decarbonization of operations at one of the RAF’s busiest aircraft bases.
