Polish private utility company Polenergia (WSE:PEP) has announced the termination of its green hydrogen research and development project, “H2 HUB Nowa Sarzyna: Green Hydrogen Storage,” due to ongoing logistical and component supply issues, reports Renewables Now.
The project aimed to use green hydrogen—produced through water electrolysis powered by renewable energy sources—to create renewable aviation fuel. In 2022, Polenergia secured a subsidy of PLN 95.1 million (USD 24 million / EUR 22 million) from the National Center for Research and Development to support the initiative.
According to a company statement issued Monday, the decision to discontinue came as the project was in its second of three planned phases. While the first phase involved a feasibility study, the second was intended to lead to the construction of a pilot facility. The final phase would have centered around developing a demonstration installation.
However, Polenergia said that tasks scheduled for the second phase could not be completed on time. Delays in the delivery of critical technological components and supply chain disruptions made it impossible to meet the deadlines outlined in the tender.
The company cited prolonged delivery times and limited availability of essential parts as major hurdles, rendering further progress unjustifiable.
Polenergia also emphasized that its current strategic focus for the 2025–2030 period lies in offshore wind development and expanding its onshore wind and solar energy capacities. It noted that it is gradually shifting away from ventures in electromobility and hydrogen.
