Visakhapatnam: Visakhapatnam took a major stride toward sustainable energy as Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone for the NTPC Green Energy Limited (NGEL) Green Hydrogen Hub on Wednesday. The project, in collaboration with the New & Renewable Energy Development Corporation of Andhra Pradesh (NREDCAP), will be set up in Pudimadaka, Anakapalle district. It is India’s first Green Hydrogen Hub under the National Green Hydrogen Mission.
Addressing the public, Prime Minister Modi highlighted the country’s ambitious plans for green hydrogen production. “India aims to produce 5 million metric tonnes of green hydrogen by 2030 under the National Green Hydrogen Mission launched in 2023. Visakhapatnam will stand among the few global cities hosting large-scale green hydrogen facilities,” he said.
The Visakhapatnam Green Hydrogen Hub will be developed at an investment of ₹1.85 lakh crore. The facility will include 20 GW of renewable energy projects and produce 1,500 tonnes per day (TPD) of green hydrogen. It will also produce 7,500 TPD of derivatives like green methanol, green urea, and sustainable aviation fuel, targeting export markets.
Prime Minister Modi noted the dual benefits of the project: promoting clean energy and generating employment while fostering a manufacturing ecosystem in Andhra Pradesh. He remarked, “This initiative highlights India’s commitment to clean energy while ensuring economic growth and environmental sustainability.”
The Visakhapatnam hub is one of two green hydrogen hubs planned in the mission’s initial phase. An NTPC official described the project as one of India’s largest integrated green hydrogen production facilities, contributing significantly to India’s target of achieving 500 GW of non-fossil energy capacity by 2030.
NGEL has already signed a joint venture agreement with NREDCAP for this initiative. In addition, the company has partnered with the Rajasthan government for renewable energy projects totalling 25 GW and is exploring similar collaborations with other states to expand the country’s renewable energy footprint.
Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu applauded the project, stating, “This initiative puts Andhra Pradesh at the forefront of clean energy development, ensuring a sustainable future for the next generation.”
With its massive scale and scope, the Visakhapatnam Green Hydrogen Hub is set to transform India’s renewable energy landscape, reinforcing its position as a global leader in sustainable energy solutions.
