Piyush Goyal launches Bharat Cleantech Manufacturing Platform

Union Minister of Commerce & Industry, Piyush Goyal, introduced the Bharat Cleantech Manufacturing Platform on Friday at the Bharat Climate Forum 2025 in New Delhi. This new initiative is aimed at strengthening India’s cleantech value chains across the solar, wind, hydrogen, and battery storage sectors.

In his speech, Goyal pointed out that while Product Linked Incentives (PLIs) and subsidies have played a role in the initial growth of the clean energy sector, they could hinder its long-term development. He emphasized that the PLI scheme may help kickstart the sector, but for sustainable growth, the clean energy industry must eventually become self-reliant and independent of government support.

He encouraged the forum’s attendees to think creatively and scale up manufacturing in India. The Bharat Cleantech Manufacturing Platform, he said, would provide Indian companies with opportunities to collaborate, innovate together, and access platforms for financing, sharing technologies, and pooling resources. This collaboration, he added, will position India as an attractive business hub and a global leader in the sustainability and cleantech sectors.

The Minister also expressed his hope that the participants would help achieve Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ambitious target of establishing 500 Gigawatts of clean energy capacity by 2030. He noted that India has been one of the most successful countries in meeting the Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and the Paris Agreement, being ahead of its targets. India had already met its renewable energy installation target for 2022, eight years ahead of schedule, and with 200 Gigawatts of clean energy already set up, the country is well on track to meet the 500 Gigawatt goal. Additionally, India now boasts the world’s largest interconnected grid.

Goyal acknowledged that addressing climate change is not new to India, citing Gujarat as one of the first states to embrace solar power. He credited the affordability of solar energy in the country to the leadership of the Prime Minister, who introduced transparency, held honest auctions, fostered fair competition, and significantly scaled up solar implementation. He concluded by highlighting the Government’s focus on the 3S approach—speed, scale, and skill—in driving the renewable energy program forward.
