Phillips 66 to begin sustainable aviation fuel production at Rodeo biorefinery

On July 30, Phillips 66 announced that its Rodeo Renewable Energy Complex in California will start producing sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) in the third quarter. The company also anticipates an improvement in renewable diesel margins later in the year, reported Biodiesel Magazine.

During the second quarter earnings call, company officials provided updates on the Rodeo Renewable Energy Complex. The biorefinery, which has been in development since mid-2022, achieved full processing rates of about 50,000 barrels per day during the second quarter of 2024. Phillips 66 Chairman and CEO Mark Lashier noted that both of the facility’s hydrocrackers and pretreatment units are now fully operational. The facility is currently shifting to lower carbon intensity (CI) feedstocks as part of efforts to optimize its economic performance.

Rich Harbison, executive vice president of refining at Phillips 66, reported that the Rodeo facility has been using approximately 50% to 55% soybean oil, with plans to increase the proportion of lower CI feedstocks in the third and fourth quarters.
