OMV announces new investment in large 140 MW green hydrogen plant

OMV has announced a final investment decision involving a mid-three-digit million-euro sum for a large-scale green hydrogen facility in Bruck an der Leitha, Lower Austria. The project includes the construction of a 140 MW electrolysis plant, contingent on a favorable outcome in the upcoming European and Austrian Hydrogen Bank auctions.

Designed to produce up to 23,000 tons of green hydrogen annually, the facility will be among the largest in Europe. Once operational, it is expected to cut carbon dioxide emissions by around 150,000 tons per year—roughly equivalent to the carbon footprint of 20,000 individuals.

Martijn van Koten, OMV Executive Vice President for Fuels & Feedstock and Chemicals, stated, “This initiative marks a transformative step in how we produce essential fuels and chemical products. It illustrates how industrial progress and environmental responsibility can work hand in hand. By integrating green hydrogen into our operations, we’re making our production processes more sustainable and future-ready. The Bruck an der Leitha plant will cover a significant portion of the hydrogen needs at our Schwechat refinery and strengthens OMV’s leadership in industrial transformation.”

Scheduled to begin operations by the end of 2027, the plant will generate green hydrogen exclusively from renewable sources, including wind, solar, and hydropower. The project builds on the success of OMV’s earlier 10 MW electrolyzer, completed in collaboration with Kommunalkredit in late 2024. That facility, one of the first green hydrogen production sites in Europe, has received certification as a Renewable Fuel of Non-Biological Origin (RFNBO) under the EU’s Renewable Energy Directive (RED).
