India’s state-owned Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) have launched a new tendering process for biodiesel procurement, aiming to acquire around 200 million liters for the first quarter of the next financial year, beginning in April 2025, reported Autocar professional.
Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL), Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL), and Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL) released the new tender last week.
This move shows the government’s continued effort to increase the use of biofuels, even though they have faced challenges in meeting their goals. Last year, the government aimed to buy 860 million liters of biodiesel.
The new tender highlights India’s commitment to blending 5% biodiesel with regular diesel by 2030, as part of the country’s national biofuel policy. This purchase is especially important because starting in April 2025, there will be penalties for selling diesel that isn’t mixed with biodiesel.
India’s journey with biodiesel began in 2005. While the amount of biodiesel purchased has increased—from 11.9 million liters in 2015-16 to 60.5 million liters in 2022-23—the actual amount of biodiesel mixed with regular diesel has remained below 1%. Currently, it’s estimated to be around 0.5% to 0.6% for the 2024-25 financial year.
