At the Advantage Assam 2.0 Summit on Tuesday, Dr. Ranjit Rath, Chairman & Managing Director of Oil India Limited (OIL), highlighted the company’s trailblazing efforts in the energy sector, focusing on the development of a bamboo feedstock-based second-generation (2G) ethanol plant at Numaligarh Refinery Limited (NRL).
Dr. Rath emphasized that this initiative is in line with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision for energy self-reliance and import substitution. He stated, “This is one of the most innovative initiatives we are undertaking. The Prime Minister’s call for import substitution is key, and this bamboo feedstock-based 2G ethanol plant will be the first of its kind in the world. Given that bamboo is abundant in the region, particularly in the northeastern states, this project will leverage local resources.”
He added, “The plant at NRL is nearly complete, and we are expecting to commission it within the next two months.”
Dr. Rath also discussed OIL’s expanding presence in the hydrocarbon sector, particularly the company’s move into compressed biogas production. “We see significant opportunities in the hydrocarbon space. We are also progressing well with a compressed biogas plant, and we look forward to continued support from the local community and the Assam government,” he said.
This announcement coincides with Assam’s growing profile as a key investment hub in India. Prime Minister Modi, who attended the summit, lauded the state’s economic development, noting its transformation into an increasingly attractive destination for investment in the past decade.
“Attended the Advantage Assam Summit. Over the last decade, Assam has witnessed significant development, which has made the state an attractive investment destination. This Summit will go a long way in highlighting the growth opportunities in the state across various sectors,” PM Modi shared on X.
The Advantage Assam 2.0 Summit has gathered policymakers, industry leaders, and investors to discuss sustainable development and economic growth in the region. With projects like the bamboo-based ethanol plant, Assam is poised to play a pivotal role in India’s energy transition and biofuel sector.
