Odisha to launch EV policy 2.0, targets 50% electric vehicle registrations by 2036

The Odisha government has announced its decision to launch “EV Policy 2.0,” an ambitious plan to ensure that at least 50% of all new vehicle registrations in the state are battery-operated electric vehicles (BEVs) by the year 2036, reports Business Standard.

The state is currently in the process of updating its existing Odisha EV Policy 2021. The revised policy will include an extension of its validity and enhanced incentives for both electric vehicle buyers and the operators of charging stations.

The framework for this new policy was recently discussed at a high-level meeting in Bhubaneswar. The session was attended by Usha Padhee, Principal Secretary for Commerce & Transport, and Vishal Kumar Dev, Principal Secretary for Energy, along with other senior officials from both departments. The discussions focused on accelerating Odisha’s transition to electric mobility and achieving these ambitious targets.

Odisha has already seen a significant increase in EV registrations. According to official statements, the percentage of electric vehicles among new registrations has jumped from 1.16% in 2021 to 8.71% as of June 20, 2025.

The state currently boasts over 550 Public Charging Stations (PCS). This network includes infrastructure managed by two-wheeler manufacturers, power distribution companies, and oil marketing companies. To further expand this infrastructure, the State Transport Authority (STA) has already issued a request for proposals for developing EV charging stations at key locations throughout Odisha.

The government is adopting a comprehensive strategy to boost both the availability of EVs (through supporting the manufacturing ecosystem) and consumer demand (through incentives). This holistic approach aims to ensure balanced and inclusive growth for electric vehicles across the state.
