State-run NTPC will invest about ₹80,000 crore in renewable energy projects in Telangana. The plan was discussed during a meeting between NTPC Chairman and Managing Director Gurdeep Singh and Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy at the Chief Minister’s residence in Hyderabad, reports Energetica India.
The investment will focus on solar and wind power, with special attention to floating solar projects that could generate up to 6,700 MW in the state.
“We welcome NTPC’s proposal and will provide all the support needed for these projects,” the Chief Minister said. Principal Secretary (Energy) Navin Mittal was also present at the meeting.
The move is part of Telangana’s renewable energy goals, which include creating Renewable Energy zones with a revised capacity target of 19 GW across eight districts.
Recently, the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs allowed NTPC more flexibility to invest through its subsidiary, NTPC Green Energy Ltd. (NGEL), raising the investment limit from ₹7,500 crore to ₹20,000 crore for adding renewable capacity. The company aims to reach 60 GW of renewable capacity by 2032.
NTPC has been stepping up its renewable energy projects across the country. Last month, NGEL signed an agreement with Bihar State Power Generation Company Ltd. to jointly develop renewable energy and battery storage projects in Bihar.
NTPC Renewable Energy Ltd., a subsidiary of NGEL, also signed an agreement with the Goa Energy Development Agency to set up at least 300 MW of renewable projects in Goa, with or without storage.
In April 2025, NGEL partnered with Mahatma Phule Renewable Energy and Infrastructure Technology (MAHAPREIT) to set up renewable energy parks with up to 10 GW capacity in Maharashtra and other states.
In March 2025, NTPC and NGEL signed agreements worth ₹96,000 crore with the Chhattisgarh government to develop nuclear, pumped hydro, and renewable projects. This includes 4,200 MW of nuclear power, 1,200 MW of pumped hydro storage, and 2 GW of renewable energy.
In February 2025, NTPC signed multiple agreements with the Madhya Pradesh government during the Global Investors Summit to develop solar, wind, and pumped hydro projects worth over ₹2 lakh crore. One of the agreements involves setting up up to 20 GW of renewable projects in the state with an estimated investment of ₹1.2 lakh crore.
That same month, NGEL formed a joint venture with the New and Renewable Energy Development Corporation of Andhra Pradesh to develop 25 GW of solar and wind projects, 10 GW of pumped storage, and green hydrogen facilities.
In January 2025, NGEL partnered with Rajasthan Rajya Vidyut Utpadan Nigam to set up up to 25 GW of renewable projects and 1 million tonnes of green hydrogen capacity in Rajasthan. The company also teamed up with Uttar Pradesh Rajya Vidyut Utpadan Nigam to develop renewable energy parks in Uttar Pradesh.
