Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, met with Singapore’s President Tharman Shanmugaratnam on Thursday and discussed India’s recent progress in clean transportation, energy transition, and road infrastructure development. Gadkari highlighted the countries’ shared interest in expanding cooperation in areas such as sustainable aviation fuel, green hydrogen, and ammonia.
In a post shared on X, Gadkari expressed his pleasure in meeting President Shanmugaratnam again, saying, “I shared with him India’s recent advancements in clean transportation, energy transition, and road infrastructure.” He added, “We agreed to explore further collaboration in sustainable aviation fuel, green hydrogen, and ammonia. His vision and foresight continue to be truly inspiring.”
During his visit, President Tharman also held talks with Union Minister of Commerce and Industry, Piyush Goyal, to explore ways to deepen India-Singapore ties across various sectors to benefit both nations. Additionally, Tharman met with Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman to discuss the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, with a focus on areas such as fintech and digital technologies.
The Singapore President is currently on a state visit to India from January 14-18. Notably, India and Singapore recently celebrated 60 years of diplomatic relations with a special event in the national capital. During the event, President Droupadi Murmu and President Tharman unveiled a commemorative logo marking the 60th anniversary, designed to represent the enduring relationship between the two countries. The logo features elements from both nations’ symbols, including the colors of their flags and the national flowers—the lotus of India and the orchid of Singapore—along with the number “60” to signify this significant milestone in their bilateral ties.
On Thursday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with President Tharman to further discuss the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between India and Singapore. The leaders explored cooperation in areas such as semiconductors, digitalization, skilling, and connectivity, as well as ways to strengthen collaboration in industry, infrastructure, and culture. Over the years, the two countries have broadened their cooperation, with key sectors now including advanced manufacturing, healthcare, sustainability, digitization, and education. Singapore continues to play a vital role in India’s Act East Policy and Indo-Pacific strategy.
To celebrate their 60th anniversary, India and Singapore will hold a series of commemorative events throughout 2025 to honor their longstanding partnership.
