NewYork GreenCloud acquires California biomass plant for carbon-negative AI project

NewYork GreenCloud (NYGC) has acquired the Buena Vista Biomass Power facility in Ione, California, marking a step toward developing what the company says will be its first large-scale carbon-negative artificial intelligence facility, reports Bioenergy Insight.

The site will integrate biomass-based pyrolysis power systems with on-site, liquid-cooled AI computing infrastructure. This setup is intended to support high-performance AI workloads using renewable, round-the-clock energy generated at the facility.

NYGC Chief Executive Officer Joe Church said the acquisition marks the start of a broader national plan to develop carbon-negative AI facilities, adding that the project is aimed at delivering advanced computing capacity while sharply reducing environmental impact.

Redevelopment of the facility is being carried out jointly by NYGC and its engineering partner, BucSha Energy, which specialises in biomass-to-pyrolysis systems.

The existing 18 MW biomass power plant will be expanded and converted into a 41 MW facility. The upgraded plant is designed to provide continuous renewable electricity to an on-site AI factory, supporting next-generation graphics processing unit clusters.

BucSha Energy founder Dave Shaffer said the project places strong emphasis on the use of local biomass resources, noting that reliance on regional feedstock helps create a clean, reliable and scalable energy supply for modern computing needs.

Impact Capital Partners served as advisor on the transaction’s capital strategy and financing structure. Sandy Goodman, managing partner at the firm, said the acquisition offers a model for expanding sustainable and scalable computing infrastructure.
