Kathmandu: The government has appointed South Korean firm G-Philos Company Limited to prepare a detailed feasibility study for Nepal’s first green hydrogen and fuel cell plant, reports Republica.
According to Investment Board Nepal (IBN), the two sides signed an agreement on Thursday, with IBN Chief Executive Officer Sushil Gyawali and G-Philos CEO Gawoo Park formalizing the deal.
Under the agreement, G-Philos will submit the study within about 10 months of receiving a survey permit from IBN. The company had earlier submitted a proposal on March 28 to develop and operate the plant under a public-private partnership model, which was later approved at IBN’s 63rd board meeting.
Speaking at the signing program in Kathmandu, South Korean Ambassador to Nepal Park Tae-Yong said Nepal has huge potential in renewable energy and stressed that such projects would support the country’s sustainable development goals while also deepening bilateral relations.
IBN CEO Gyawali said the project would be important for Nepal, as it would bring in both investment and technology. He added that the government is committed to moving forward quickly once the feasibility study is completed.
Officials and experts also shared their views during the program. Electricity Regulatory Commission Chairman Ram Prasad Dhital, Department of Electricity Development Director General Jeebachh Mandal, Energy Ministry Joint Secretary Chiranjivi Chataut, Nepal Electricity Authority Executive Director Hitendra Dev Shakya, and Kathmandu University researcher Biraj Singh Thapa discussed Nepal’s policies on green hydrogen, the potential benefits of such projects, and their role in shaping the country’s energy future.
