Nepal prepares to harness green hydrogen potential

Kathmandu: Nepal’s government is taking concrete steps to advance green hydrogen as a clean energy solution, Minister for Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation Dipak Khadka announced during a meeting with professors from Kathmandu University on Thursday. He emphasized that a work procedure is being prepared to guide green hydrogen development and integrate it into the country’s energy strategy, reports Radio Nepal.

“Green hydrogen is a tremendous opportunity for Nepal in terms of energy production and reducing carbon emissions. The government is serious about taking this issue ahead,” Minister Khadka told participants, reinforcing its role in achieving net-zero ambitions and promoting environmental sustainability.

Energy Secretary Suresh Acharya added that a task force has already been formed to explore alternative fuel sources, including green hydrogen, and assess their feasibility in the Nepali context.

Jibachh Mandal, joint secretary and task force member, highlighted that green hydrogen technology has seen successful global deployment in recent years. “Nepal has great potential too,” he said, referencing the country’s abundant renewable energy sources, particularly hydropower, which could be leveraged for renewable hydrogen production.

Supporting the government’s direction, Prof. Dr. Biraj Sing Thapa, who leads the Green Hydrogen Lab at Kathmandu University, urged immediate investment in renewable hydrogen, pointing out that it is already more cost-effective than fossil-fuel-derived grey hydrogen in many parts of the world. He noted that countries like India, Japan, South Korea, and the UAE have already embraced this clean fuel.

Nepal’s strategic positioning with hydroelectric potential, combined with rising interest in decarbonizing industries and transportation, puts it in a favorable spot to leapfrog into the green hydrogen economy, potentially creating export opportunities and energy independence.

This move aligns with broader global trends in transitioning to sustainable fuels and signals Nepal’s intent to join the ranks of nations innovating in climate-smart energy solutions.
