Municipal Corporation of Delhi steps up pollution control measures

New Delhi: As Delhi faces worsening air quality under GRAP-3 restrictions, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has intensified coordinated efforts across multiple zones to curb pollution. The civic body has rolled out a series of enforcement actions—from sealing illegal industrial units and penalising biomass burning to conducting targeted sanitation drives—in an attempt to tackle the capital’s growing environmental crisis, reports Millenniumpost.

In a major crackdown, the West Zone, working with the DPCC, BSES and local authorities, sealed four industrial units in Bindapur, Ward No. 116. The units included two coal-fired bhatti setups, a chemical factory and a noodle-manufacturing facility, all found operating in violation of environmental norms. Officials said the units were identified as significant sources of air and water pollution, prompting immediate action.

The Keshavpuram Zone carried out an extensive sanitation drive near the railway tracks at Azadpur Railway Station after receiving public complaints on social media. The 1.5-acre stretch, located on railway land and surrounded by jhuggi clusters, had become a dumping hotspot. Heavy machinery and sanitation workers were deployed to clear accumulated waste and restore cleanliness.

In the Shahdara North Zone, officials issued 24 challans against individuals engaged in biomass burning, a recurring contributor to Delhi’s winter smog. Encroachment-removal efforts were also undertaken along Sewadham Road to ease congestion and improve the local environment.

Reaffirming its commitment to stricter pollution control, the MCD urged residents not to burn waste and to support ongoing enforcement and sanitation initiatives as the city battles another severe pollution phase.
