Mitsubishi and ENEOS to conduct FEED for Sustainable Aviation Fuel Production at Wakayama Refinery

ENEOS Corporation (President: Yamaguchi Atsuji) and Mitsubishi Corporation (President & CEO: Nakanishi Katsuya) have entered into a joint agreement to conduct Front End Engineering Design (FEED) for a Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) production facility at the ENEOS Wakayama Plant in Arida City, Japan. The FEED aims to advance the feasibility study for large-scale SAF production.

Since 2022, ENEOS has been exploring the feasibility of establishing a SAF production facility. Now, in collaboration with Mitsubishi Corporation, which has global expertise in feedstock procurement, the companies are set to accelerate their efforts. ENEOS brings valuable experience in sales networks, manufacturing, refining technologies, and feedstock procurement, while Mitsubishi Corporation offers its strong capabilities in feedstock procurement across Japan and internationally.

Together, ENEOS and Mitsubishi Corporation aim to drive the development of a SAF production facility in Japan. The planned facility, contingent on FEED outcomes, is projected to produce approximately 300,000 tons (400,000 KL) of SAF annually from FY2028. In addition to SAF, the facility will generate bio-naphtha and bio-diesel fuel as byproducts, utilizing feedstock such as used cooking oil, animal fats, and other waste materials.

Both ENEOS and Mitsubishi Corporation are committed to addressing climate change and advancing CO2 emission reduction efforts as part of their shared vision for a decarbonized, circular society. The collaboration on SAF production is a key part of their ongoing efforts to promote sustainability and reduce environmental impact.
