Manufacturing of India’s first hydrogen-powered train-set completed

Indian Railways has successfully completed the manufacturing of its first hydrogen-powered train-set, marking a significant milestone in the country’s push toward sustainable and next-generation rail technology. The project, developed as a pilot initiative under specifications framed by the Research, Design & Standards Organization (RDSO), showcases the Railways’ growing commitment to clean energy solutions and the vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat.

To support operations of the hydrogen train-set, a dedicated hydrogen production plant has been set up at Jind. The facility uses electrolysis—an essential process for generating green hydrogen—ensuring that the fuel used is environmentally friendly and contributes to India’s broader renewable energy goals.

Key Features of the Hydrogen Train-Set

Designed and developed entirely in India, reinforcing the Railways’ commitment to indigenous innovation.

Recognized as the world’s longest (10 coaches) and most powerful (2400 kW) hydrogen train-set built on a broad-gauge platform.

Comprises two Driving Power Cars (DPCs) of 1200 kW each and eight passenger coaches, demonstrating substantial power and capacity.

Offers zero carbon dioxide emissions, with water vapour as the only by-product, making it a true green mobility solution.

Represents a major stride in next-generation fuel technology for Indian Railways.

The development process encompassed end-to-end design, prototype manufacturing, and the first-ever creation of hydrogen traction technology within the Railways. Officials emphasized that since the train and its supporting infrastructure are being developed under a pilot framework, a direct cost comparison with other established traction systems would not be appropriate at this stage.

A Step Toward India’s Green Transport Future

The hydrogen train initiative underscores Indian Railways’ commitment to alternative energy-powered mobility. It aligns with national objectives to reduce carbon emissions, modernize transportation infrastructure, and foster long-term environmental sustainability.
