Malaysia: Selangor targets 50% electric bus fleet by 2028 under green push

The Selangor State Government is planning to convert half of its public bus fleet to electric by 2028 under the Smart Selangor initiative, as part of efforts to promote cleaner transport and reduce dependence on fossil fuels, Business Today reported.

The move comes in response to global energy uncertainties and rising fuel costs linked to geopolitical tensions in West Asia, said, State Executive Councillor Ng Sze Han.

He said shifting to electric buses would help cut reliance on diesel subsidies while supporting Malaysia’s National Energy Transition Roadmap and its long-term goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050.

The Smart Selangor free bus programme currently operates 156 buses across 57 routes, serving over 8 million passengers annually. Since the transition began in 2024, 26 buses have already been converted to electric.

Local authorities including Majlis Bandaraya Subang Jaya have taken the lead, deploying electric buses across multiple routes, along with similar efforts in Klang, Shah Alam, Hulu Selangor and Petaling Jaya.

The state has outlined a phased plan, with a target of fully electrifying its bus fleet by 2030 as part of its broader green mobility strategy.
