Kuala Lumpur: Malaysia and Japan have proposed setting up a new cooperation centre in Malaysia to enhance collaboration in technology, sustainability, and ASEAN energy integration, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced today, reports The Malaysian Reserve.
In a post on Facebook, Anwar said the proposal highlights Malaysia’s leadership role as the 2025 ASEAN Chair in driving the region’s shift toward a low-carbon future.
“We welcome Japan’s technical expertise and advanced research support, particularly through initiatives like the Asia Zero Emission Community (AZEC), which will help speed up the full and large-scale rollout of the National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR),” Anwar said.
He noted that Japan’s strengths in renewable energy, bioenergy, and carbon capture, utilisation and storage (CCUS) make it a valuable partner in Malaysia’s efforts to become a regional centre for sustainable energy innovation.
The idea for the cooperation centre was discussed during a meeting between Anwar and Japan’s former Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, who paid a courtesy call today.
Anwar expressed confidence that closer partnerships between businesses, governments, and research institutions in both countries would support Malaysia’s clean energy transition, encourage new technologies, and strengthen the region’s economic stability.
“This is the time to build a stronger economy for a sustainable legacy for future generations,” he added.
