Malaysia eyes B100 biodiesel as cheaper alternative to diesel

Kuala Lumpur: With diesel prices rising sharply, Malaysia is exploring B100 biodiesel as a lower-cost and locally sourced alternative, with Federal Land Development Authority (FELDA) pushing for policy support to scale up its use, Paultan reported.

FELDA chairman Ahmad Shabery Cheek said B100 biodiesel could help reduce reliance on imported fuel and strengthen energy security. He noted that the fuel is currently priced below RM5 per litre, compared to diesel at RM6.72 per litre.

The proposal is still at the policy stage, with discussions underway with Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

B100 biodiesel has already been tested within the FELDA ecosystem, including pilot projects in 2025 where vehicles covered over 50,000 km in a year, along with earlier trials involving tanker trucks.

However, Ahmad Shabery said large-scale rollout would require a clear government policy, as well as adequate supply of crude palm oil. He added that production capacity would need to be expanded by FELDA and FGV Holdings to meet potential demand.

He said discussions are ongoing on possible partnerships involving the private sector and government support to scale up production.

The push for B100 comes as part of Malaysia’s broader energy transition plans, with the second phase of the National Energy Transition Roadmap targeting wider adoption of biodiesel blends, including B30 for diesel vehicles by 2030.
