Major push for renewable energy: Rs 14,147 crore transmission scheme discussed to evacuate solar power from key zone

A high-level meeting was held on July 3, 2025, to assess and address critical issues affecting major infrastructure projects in Gujarat and Rajasthan. Convened under the Project Monitoring Group (PMG) framework, the session focused on fast-tracking project implementation by removing bottlenecks. A total of 22 issues concerning 18 vital projects—together valued at more than ₹36,296 crore—were brought up for resolution.

One of the central projects under review was the Transmission System Strengthening Scheme, designed to facilitate the evacuation of power from solar energy zones in both states. With an estimated investment of ₹14,147 crore, the initiative aims to support India’s renewable energy push by establishing robust transmission infrastructure—such as high-capacity lines and substations—to carry solar-generated electricity to consumption hubs across the country.

In Rajasthan, the scheme is centred around solar zones in Jaisalmer, Bikaner, and Barmer, while in Gujarat, the focus is on Surendranagar, Patan, and Kutch. These regions are key to harnessing solar power at scale. The meeting zeroed in on persistent hurdles like right-of-way (RoW) challenges and land acquisition delays, with a view to resolving them swiftly.

Also on the agenda was Reliance Jio’s 5G/4G expansion project, recognised as a project of national significance. The initiative aims to roll out 5G services to currently underserved and remote areas while reinforcing the existing 4G network. Discussions with state authorities sought to fast-track clearances—particularly those related to forest land—so that the project can move ahead without further delays. Upon completion, the network expansion is expected to significantly enhance digital connectivity in remote and strategically important locations.

The meeting was chaired by Shri Praveen Mahto, Principal Economic Adviser at the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT). He reiterated the Government’s focus on strengthening institutional mechanisms to improve project monitoring and delivery. Mahto urged officials to take a proactive stance in resolving outstanding issues and encouraged private stakeholders to make full use of the PMG portal (https://pmg.dpiit.gov.in/) to facilitate faster project execution.

He also stressed the need for coordinated efforts among Central Ministries, State Governments, and private players to ensure timely completion of projects. The session was attended by senior representatives from relevant ministries, state departments, and project proponents, underscoring the collective commitment to infrastructure-led growth.
