The Maharashtra state government is actively considering the launch of an app-based passenger transport service, aiming to create employment opportunities for the youth across the state.
As per an official release, the proposed initiative would extend beyond the domain of private operators, incorporating auto-rickshaws, taxis, and e-bikes under a government-backed platform. The app is likely to be named one of the following: ‘Jai Maharashtra’, ‘Maha-Ride’, ‘Maha-Yatri’, or ‘Maha-Go’. This platform is being developed in partnership with the state’s Transport Department.
Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik shared the update, noting that the final decision rests with Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Deputy Chief Ministers Eknath Shinde and Ajit Pawar. However, he expressed optimism that the app will be launched in the near future.
According to Minister Sarnaik, discussions are underway with several private players, including the Maharashtra Institute for Transport Technology and ‘Mitra’, to develop the app. The platform will incorporate features aimed at ensuring transparency and efficiency in the transport system and is expected to be ready soon.
To support Marathi youth entering the transport sector, the government will offer financial assistance. Unemployed individuals can access loans with a 10% interest rate through Mumbai Bank to purchase vehicles. Mumbai Bank Chairman Praveen Darekar confirmed the arrangement, adding that an 11% interest subsidy would be provided through schemes run by the Annasaheb Economic Development Corporation, Bhatke Vimukta Corporation, OBC Corporation, and the Maharashtra State Development Corporation. This effectively makes the loan interest-free.
Minister Sarnaik also mentioned that regulatory preparations for the app are in the final stages and are being aligned with the Central Government’s Aggregator Guidelines. He pointed out that many private apps currently operate without authorization, often exploiting both drivers and passengers. “The government has the necessary infrastructure, technology, and workforce. By launching this app, it can provide a better alternative that benefits both commuters and drivers,” he said.
A key meeting to finalize the project has been scheduled for August 5 at the Ministry. Attendees will include MLA Praveen Darekar, technical experts involved in app development, and senior government officials. The meeting is expected to set the groundwork for the official rollout of the government’s transport app.
