L&T bags major power transmission orders in India, Middle East

Larsen & Toubro has won large infrastructure contracts in India and the Middle East to expand and strengthen power transmission networks, the company announced. The projects fall under its Power Transmission & Distribution business and are classified as “major” orders, with a value ranging between ₹5,000 crore and ₹10,000 crore, Solarquarter reported.

In West Bengal, the company will design, supply and build two 220 kV gas insulated substations in the Durgapur–Raniganj–Asansol industrial region. The work also includes associated transmission line stretches equipped with advanced conductors and multi-circuit towers. The project is part of ongoing efforts to upgrade the power grid in the area, with the aim of improving voltage levels and ensuring a more reliable electricity supply. The improved network is expected to support growing industrial and infrastructure activity in the region, which is an important economic hub in the state.

Apart from its domestic project, L&T has secured turnkey contracts from major utility companies in three Middle Eastern countries. These contracts involve the construction of five substations and more than 250 kilometres of transmission lines. The systems will operate at voltage levels of up to 500 kV to meet the rising electricity needs of expanding power networks in the region.

One of the Middle East projects also includes the supply and installation of a 400 kV underground cable system. Such underground systems are generally used in cities or environmentally sensitive areas where overhead lines are not suitable. The projects are expected to improve power flow between regions and ensure stable electricity supply amid growing demand and changes in energy sources.

The company said that rising electricity consumption, changing patterns of power generation and energy security concerns have made investment in grid infrastructure a priority for many countries. It added that modern transmission systems are essential to integrate renewable energy, manage increasing load and maintain stable power supply.L&T said the new orders reflect continued trust from customers in its ability to deliver power infrastructure projects safely and within timelines. The $30 billion Indian multinational operates across engineering and construction, high-technology manufacturing and services in several countries and has held a leadership position in its core businesses for more than eight decades.
