The Agency for New and Renewable Energy Research and Technology (Anert) has received approval to pilot Kerala’s first green hydrogen mobility project, officials confirmed.
The project includes two trucks powered by fuel cells, two trucks with hydrogen internal combustion engines, and two hydrogen refuelling stations. The proposal, submitted to the Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI) under the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, will be implemented as part of the National Green Hydrogen Mission.
Anert, the state’s nodal agency for green hydrogen initiatives, described the project as Kerala’s first step into hydrogen-powered transportation. According to officials, Anert’s proposal was one of seven selected out of 13 submissions, making it the only one approved by a State-level nodal agency.
The project is eligible for ₹35 crore in viability gap funding, covering 90% of its cost, under the central initiative. Anert has partnered with Ashok Leyland for hydrogen-powered trucks, Bharat Petroleum and Greenstat for refuelling plants, and the Kerala State Road Transport Corporation for operations.
