Kenya Airways makes history with half sustainable fuel intra-Africa flight

In a major step for the aviation sector, Kenya Airways has completed its first intra-African flight from Nairobi to Cape Town using a 50% blend of Sustainable Aviation Fuel, in line with international standards set by International Air Transport Association and the Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation, Sunday Tribune reported.

The airline said the flight marks an important move toward reducing the environmental impact of air travel across Africa. Officials described it as a significant achievement in the effort to cut emissions and promote cleaner operations.

The Sustainable Aviation Fuel used in the flight is produced from waste-based materials such as used cooking oil through a recognised process. When properly produced and used, it can reduce greenhouse gas emissions by up to 85% compared to conventional jet fuel. The airline said the fuel’s attributes were verified under global certification systems to ensure full traceability and transparency.

This milestone flight is part of the SkyTeam Aviation Challenge 2025, themed “Impact,” which aims to highlight practical steps taken by airlines to improve sustainability. The measures introduced on board went beyond fuel use and included several waste-reduction initiatives.

Inflight changes included upcycled blanket bags and headset covers, along with reusable cutlery to reduce waste. In catering, the airline served locally sourced Kenyan coffee and tea, replaced plastic bottles with canned beverages, and introduced reusable cups for hot drinks. The airline also strengthened recycling procedures for onboard waste and encouraged the reuse of service items. Cabin crew members were engaged to help inform passengers about responsible travel practices.

Hellen Mwariri, Chief Strategy and Innovation Officer of Kenya Airways, said the flight demonstrates what can be achieved through cooperation and innovation, adding that it reflects practical solutions aimed at lowering environmental impact while maintaining efficient operations.

The airline said it remains committed to global sustainability goals and is working with government agencies, local innovators, and international partners, including SkyTeam and the African Airlines Association, to develop local Sustainable Aviation Fuel production capacity in Kenya by 2026.

The initiative is expected to support the airline’s long-term environmental goals while also contributing to economic growth and creating new employment opportunities in the emerging green sector.

With this achievement, Kenya Airways has positioned itself as a leader in environmentally responsible air travel in Africa, a move that could encourage other airlines on the continent to expand their sustainability efforts.
