JSW Infrastructure Ltd, India’s second-largest port operator, is exploring the potential of building green hydrogen and ammonia plants at its ports to venture into this expanding market, reported Economic Times.
Arun Maheshwari, joint managing director, expressed, “This is a new age business that is emerging. We have been considering and investigating possibilities in this sector.”
He added, “We have been approached by companies interested in the green hydrogen and ammonia sectors, and we are assessing the feasibility of entering this market.”
When questioned about the timeline, Maheshwari noted that establishing such facilities would involve long-term, capital-intensive projects necessitating suitable land, robust infrastructure, and strategically located ports. “Fortunately, our existing and upcoming port sites are attractive to potential stakeholders. However, we have not yet set a specific timeframe for these projects.”
Earlier this year, the Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways (MoPSW) identified Kandla, Paradip, and Tuticorin ports as future export hubs for green hydrogen, ammonia, and methanol by 2027, aiming to position India as a leading exporter of green hydrogen.
Recently, Adani Ports & SEZ announced plans for its Vizhinjam Port to become a global bunkering hub, supplying clean fuels such as hydrogen and ammonia. Adani Ports intends to leverage its ports on India’s West Coast for exporting these green fuels.
Meanwhile, JSW Energy, a sister concern of JSW Infra, is also actively exploring acquisitions in the green energy sector.
