John Thompson and BECS join forces to deliver biomass energy solutions across Africa

John Thompson, a division of ACTOM, and biomass energy developer Berkeley Energy Corporate Solutions (BECS) have formed a strategic partnership to provide profitable, renewable energy solutions to African industries. The collaboration aims to accelerate the adoption of reliable, low-carbon steam systems for industrial clients across the continent, reports Engineering News.

The alliance combines John Thompson’s engineering and manufacturing expertise with BECS’ innovative approach to sourcing and supplying sustainable biomass fuel. It is designed to help businesses reduce reliance on fossil fuels, lower carbon emissions, and meet growing demand for cost-effective renewable energy.

“This partnership allows businesses to transition to low-carbon energy without the usual high costs or technical challenges,” said Jaco Grobbelaar, CEO of John Thompson Industrial. “Clients don’t need to be energy experts — we handle the investment, the risk, and the system performance.”

BECS plays a key role in ensuring a secure and sustainable fuel supply. The company works directly with agricultural and forestry producers to secure long-term, traceable biomass contracts tailored to each client’s needs. “In a market where supply risks can stall adoption, we provide stability and competitive pricing,” said Jonathan Probert, BECS Southern Africa business development manager.

The partnership’s model, based on long-term heat offtake agreements, allows clients to pay only for the steam they consume. Nicholas Tatrallyay, BECS managing director, added, “This enables us to deliver bankable, end-to-end energy solutions that meet the real needs of industrial clients.”

Initial projects are underway in South Africa, with plans to expand to Zambia, Kenya, Mozambique, and Ghana. By integrating BECS’ fuel supply with John Thompson’s proven boiler systems, clients can expect a seamless transition to renewable energy without compromising performance or uptime.

“This is about more than switching fuels — it’s about delivering a complete, reliable renewable energy solution,” concluded Grobbelaar.
