JetBlue announces first regular supply of Blended Sustainable Aviation Fuel for commercial air travel in New York

JetBlue and World Fuel Services, a division of World Kinect, have announced a new commercial agreement to supply John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) with the first regular shipment of Blended Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), sourced from Valero Marketing and Supply Company (Valero), a subsidiary of Valero Energy Corporation (NYSE: VLO), starting as early as the fourth quarter of 2024. The initial 12-month agreement includes JetBlue receiving at least 1,000,000 gallons of neat sustainable aviation fuel (equivalent to approximately 3,300,000 gallons when blended), with an option to purchase up to an additional 4,000,000 gallons (around 13,300,000 gallons blended). The SAF will be supplied through existing infrastructure, such as the Colonial Pipeline.

Sara Bogdan, JetBlue’s Managing Director of Sustainability and Environmental Social Governance, commented, “The introduction of SAF in our hometown marks a significant step forward in the commitment of major fuel producers and the potential of SAF to significantly reduce aviation carbon emissions. Leveraging Valero’s expertise in energy markets and logistics, and using current jet fuel distribution systems, this large-scale SAF supply is poised to be a landmark development as the industry expands SAF usage. Maximizing this opportunity will require collaboration across all sectors.”

According to the press release, as New York’s Hometown Airline®, JetBlue has long aimed to introduce blended SAF to the northeast and is seeking to expand its supply through partnerships with other New York-based businesses. The airline anticipates that continued corporate support and incentive programs will foster a growing SAF market at one of the world’s busiest airport systems.

The neat sustainable aviation fuel, produced by Diamond Green Diesel, LLC—a joint venture between a Valero affiliate and Darling Ingredients Inc.—will be blended by Valero with conventional jet fuel to produce the blended SAF, which will be delivered by World Fuel. This blended SAF is compatible with existing aircraft and infrastructure. Neat sustainable aviation fuel is derived from various feedstocks, including agricultural waste and used cooking oils, and can reduce lifecycle GHG emissions by approximately 80% compared to traditional jet fuel. The fuel will be delivered via current jet fuel distribution infrastructure and utilized by JetBlue in New York.
