Jet Zero Australia executes FEED agreements to advance Australia’s first bioethanol to sustainable aviation fuel project

Jet Zero Australia Pty Ltd (Jet Zero) has confirmed the signing of a Front-End Engineering Design (FEED) Contract with Technip Energies and the continuation of the Owner’s Engineering Services Contract with Long Energy & Resources (LERA) for Project Ulysses, a bioethanol-to-Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) initiative based in Townsville, Australia.

The contracts, set to span several months, will cover a wide range of engineering activities, documentation, and planning. These efforts are aimed at refining the Project’s cost estimates, establishing detailed timelines, and preparing a foundation for the Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) contracts.

The goal of the Project is to produce 102 million litres of SAF and 11 million litres of renewable diesel annually by 2028, sourced from Australian bioethanol. This will be achieved using the cutting-edge Alcohol-to-Jet (ATJ) technology developed by LanzaJet, a leading SAF technology provider. The initiative is expected to have a significant economic impact on North Queensland, creating over 100 skilled operational jobs and contributing to Australia’s energy security by increasing domestic jet fuel production for both civilian and military aviation.

Technip Energies, a global leader in engineering and energy decarbonisation, will oversee the FEED activities from its offices in Perth and Brisbane, offering comprehensive EPC services and expertise. LERA will provide specialized project management and owner engineering services from Brisbane, ensuring that the FEED engineering aligns with Jet Zero’s design philosophy and contractual requirements.

This $36.8 million FEED program is made possible thanks to crucial funding from Jet Zero’s investors and partners, including Airbus, Qantas, and Japan’s Idemitsu, as well as support from the Australian Government’s Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) through its Advancing Renewables Program and the Queensland Government’s Department of State Development, Infrastructure, and Planning (DSDIP).

Janelle Poole MP, Queensland’s Assistant Minister for Community Safety, Defence Industry, Veterans and North Queensland, and Member for Mundingburra, highlighted the Queensland Government’s commitment to fostering new industries and driving economic growth in the region, with a focus on expanding the biofuels sector and collaborating with agricultural areas.

The announcement was made during an industry outreach event hosted by Airbus Chief Sustainability Officer Julie Kitcher. The contract signing was attended by Gareth Philp, Managing Director of Technip Energies Australia; Chris Lawson, CEO of LERA; and Ed Mason, CEO of Jet Zero, with Fiona Messent, Chief Sustainability Officer of Qantas, and Flyn Van Ewijk, Regional Director for Asia Pacific at LanzaJet, also present as witnesses.
