Indonesia sets biodiesel roadmap to raise blending to B50 by 2028

Jakarta: Indonesia has announced a detailed roadmap to expand biodiesel use, setting a target to raise the blending level to 50 per cent by 2028 as part of efforts to strengthen energy security and reduce reliance on conventional fuels, The Edge Malaysia reported.

The Energy Ministry said all biodiesel users will gradually shift to the B50 standard, which includes 50 per cent palm oil-based fuel. The plan builds on the earlier target of introducing a 40 per cent blend from 2026.

Authorities will begin rolling out the higher B50 blend from July 1, advancing the timeline as part of measures to manage risks linked to the Iran conflict.

Under the plan, subsidised diesel is expected to adopt the 50 per cent blend by 2027, while non-subsidised diesel may continue with a 40 per cent blend depending on supply conditions. By 2028, the B50 standard will apply to all users.

A senior renewable energy official said the phased approach is aimed at ensuring a smooth transition, keeping in mind the availability of raw materials, infrastructure readiness and industry support.

The ministry is also expected to issue a fresh order later this year to allocate biodiesel supplies needed to meet the B50 target. It had earlier fixed a target of 15.65 million kilolitres for 2026 under the B40 programme.

In addition, Indonesia plans to introduce ethanol blending in petrol, with non-subsidised fuel in Java set to include at least 5 per cent ethanol during 2026–27, rising to 10 per cent by 2028.

The country is also preparing to introduce sustainable aviation fuel from 2027, starting with a 1 per cent blend for flights operating from Jakarta’s Soekarno-Hatta International Airport and Bali’s I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport.
